How to choose a kayak that is right for you

There are many factors that go into choosing a kayak. But keep in mind, it is always your choice and personal preferences that matter most. To help guide you, we'll walk you through a few things that you should consider. It can be overwhelming when you first start looking at different kayaks - so many styles, lengths shapes and colors. How do you choose? Well, it's like anything - process of elimination. There's no need to focus on all the kayaks. You'll need to narrow your search down.

Here are the very first three things you should consider when choosing a kayak - your paddling skill level (novice, intermediate, expert), your size (tall, short) and your weight (heavy, light). If you're a beginner, you'll want a boat that you are comfortable in, yet that you won't outgrow quickly. Whether you are tall or short, heavy or light will help narrow down the selection. Kayak manufacturers usually provide information about each boat including maximum weight capacity. That's the maximum amount of weight, including you and any cargo, that the boat will still be able to paddle efficiently.

Paddling Locations. Next, consider how and where you'll be using your boat. Touring, recreational, fishing, whitewater? You want the right boat for the job. Will you be paddling in small creeks or large open water like oceans and bays?

Dimensions. Long, narrow boats in the 16 feet and up length are fast and efficient, but are more difficult to maneuver. They can carry a lot of cargo, therefore they are best for touring and sea kayaking. These kayaks are usually paddled in larger bodies of water like lakes. Short boats in the 6 to 10 foot length range maneuver well, however they require more effort to propel them and keep them on course. Short boats are better suited for flowing water like rivers. Then, there are the in-between lengths, usually in the 12 to 14 feet length range. These boats are for general purpose.

Configuration. With kayaks, you'll also need to consider the configuration. There are sit-inside models and sit-on-top models. Most are sit-ins, meaning they have a cockpit or opening that you'll sit down in. Cockpit size openings vary depending on the size and style of the boat. Sit-on-top, or SOTs, have an open configuration, where you actually are not sitting inside a cockpit. Most SOTs are self-bailing and have scupper holes allowing water to drain back out. These boats make it easy for self-rescue and lend themselves to activities like fishing and diving. They offer less protection from the elements.

Materials. The type of material that a kayak is made out of may, or may not, have a bearing on your purchasing decision. But let's take a general look at the differences. Roto-molded plastic is the most common. It's durable, less expensive and usually heavier - making it a good choice for beginners or rocky areas. Composite materials, like fiberglass and kevlar, greatly reduce the boat's overall weight, add stiffness and make better design possible. However, they do cost more and require more care. Usually you'll see longer boats offered in composite materials. In between is thermo-formed plastic. It's lighter and more rigid than roto-molded plastic, but is not as expensive as composite material. There are other materials available, but these are the most common.

This is a basic overview. Hopefully, it will help you so that you are not intimidated when searching for a kayak. Once you narrow your selection down, there are additional details about each type of kayak. We'll add some information on this blog shortly.

The ABCs of layering and its benefits
The primary purpose of layering is to maintain an even body temperature (regardless of physical exertion or weather conditions) by regularly adding and removing layers. During winter or chilly weather, this is vital to prevent hypothermia, especially when engaging in sweat-inducing or stop-and-go activities. Layers should be easily accessible for quick deployment or storage.

Base Layer (next to skin) wicks sweat away from your skin so it can dry quickly to prevent chill. For cool or cold weather, your base layer must fit snugly. If it's not touching your skin, it can't wick sweat. Serious shivering occurs if sweat sits on your skin until it evaporates. You can choose from synthetics (like Patagonia's Capilene©, wool (like Icebreaker's pure merino) or a blend of the two (like Outdoor Research's Dri-release© Wool); AVOID cotton because it takes too long to dry.

Mid Layer (insulation) traps body heat. It can range from lightweight fleeces and wool sweaters to fluffy down pieces; it just depends on the season and your personal preference. During high-aerobic activities (ice climbing, backcountry snowshoeing), your insulation stays in your pack so your body heat can escape. Once you stop moving, put it on so you won't cool down while your sweat dries.

Outer Layers (shells) are like the walls of a house--they prevent wind and precipitation from getting in and create a micro-climate. When the temperature gets too high, ventilation features (pit zips) allow excess heat to escape. Trapped sweat drops your body temperature. In winter and on extended trips, a breathable, waterproof shell is a necessity.

TLC for Your Technical Outerwear

Purchasing quality technical outerwear is an investment, so you should know the best way to properly take care of it. To optimize your outerwear's waterproof, breathable performance proper care and maintenance is required.

Cleaning
Dirt, grime and body oils can clog the pores of your new outerwear's surface fabric and limit the breathability of the waterproof membrane. Normal washing detergents (most liquid-based ones) actually can make things worse by leaving a water-attracting residue. read the labels for the manufacturer-recommended cleaners designed for outerwear. In a pinch, use a mild, non-detergent, powdered cleaner.

Avoid fabric softeners -- they're great for bath towels, but not for your technical fabrics. If softener makes it into the wash load, re-wash the garment twice in warm, soap-free water.

What is DWR?
Durable Water Repellent (DWR) is an invisible finish applied to the outer fabric of most outdoor clothing. It prevents the fabric from absorbing water by making water bead up on the surface and roll off. (The next time you are in our store, ask us to show you a demonstration). Maintaining the DWR is vital to ensuring the waterproof membrane's breathability.

Re-treat with DWR when needed. If water no longer beads up on the fabric surface and it appears to soak in, the DWR has worn off. Re-apply with a spray-on or wash-in treatment. Dry outerwear in your dryer, on a medium setting -- heat actually helps restore the DWR.

My friend John “Chico” Burkhardt and I hit some milestones on our last section hike and I thought I’d share this photo and some details with “our” outfitter. We’ve been “sectioning” for 11 years and have hiked everything from Springer to the Pennsylvania line. We went past 1,000 miles, finally got through Virginia, and are at the Mason-Dixon Line. Autumn Kayak Fishing on the Great Miami River

We usually paddle this 5.5 mile stretch of the Great Miami River from West Carrollton to downtown Miamisburg, but usually don't have the time (or take the time) to fish that section from our kayaks. Last Friday, October 22 we decided to change that. So we packed up some lunches and our fishing gear and Andrew and I headed out in the early afternoon. It was a beautiful sunny day with the temperature hovering right at about 60 degrees. We planned to take our time, and try to locate some smallmouth bass hanging out in deep pools or moving water.

We left the fly rods at home. Our goal on this outing was just to stalk and find areas that held fish. We used light tackle with a variety of artificial lures including tube baits, rooster tails, and crankbaits.

We put in below the low dam in West Carrollton. I was paddling a Wenonah Fusion 13ft solo canoe and Andrew was paddling the Native Watercraft Ultimate 12. The water was clear and cold, just the way our prey liked it. Leaves were in full autumn color and fluttering down to add to the picture-perfect day. It was so beautiful and relaxing that we told ourselves it didn't matter if we caught any fish. In fact, earlier in the summer we fly-fished on Utah's Provo River, and believe it or not, many qualities of this stretch of the Great Miami River reminded us of that western trip. It was just nice to be out - father and son.

For the first hour we fished hard, changing lures and tactics often. Slow retrieve, fast retrieve, bouncing off the bottom, top crankbaits, deep pools, and shallow water. Nothing seemed to work until we switched to rooster tails and fished along the seams of fast moving water. It's where we suspected the bronzebacks would be lying in wait for their next meal. We were right. Well, at least Andrew was right. He caught several smallmouth bass in the 10-12 inch range. I on the other hand got skunked. Same lure, same technique, no fish.

Usually this stretch can be paddled in 1-1/2 to 2 hours. We took our sweet time, averaging only one river mile per hour. So after nearly 5 hours on the water it was time to get out as dark was closing in quickly. We both said that it still wasn't enough time to thoroughly explore that stretch. Next time maybe we'll only average half mile per hour. I guess we better get up and on the water early in the morning.

Celebrating three years in business

Great Miami Outfitters celebrated our third year in business in late May. To show our appreciation to all of our customers, we hosted an Open House Celebration last weekend. The weather didn't cooperate, but we were amazed how many of our loyal customers showed up during the day. It was the first time many of you visited our second building (right behind our main store) displaying all the canoes, kayaks and paddling accessories we have in stock. Impromptu Great Miami River Trip

Last Saturday was dreary and cold for an early May day. When we closed up the shop for the day the temperature was hovering around 50 degrees with a brisk wind from the northwest. Despite the somewhat cool conditions we decided we needed to paddle. So six of us, loaded the kayaks and drove up to West Carrollton for the put in.

The river was flowing pretty good and the level was up. It started to drizzle and the temp was falling. But it was great to be on the water. We had a chance to get in a few new kayaks. Joe paddled the Native Watercraft Inuit 13, Andrew paddled the Hurricane Tampico 135L, Logan opted for the Native Watercraft Ultimate 12 (and yes, of course, he had to stand up), Joe's friends both paddled the Current Designs Kestrels and I chose the Native Watercraft Marvel 12.

At a few points along the route, the air was filled with a massive insect hatch and as many swallows. We couldn't identify the type of swallow as dusk had set in. We also saw several blue herons and another large specimen that we could not identify. Next time we'll take the Peterson' Bird Guide.

We arrived back in Miamisburg just as the rain started. It was 47 degrees and a few toes were blue, but we were all smiling and can't wait to do it again.

As if a brisk morning hike were not enough, you'll get the chance to see a liquid stove, a canister stove, a Jetboil and an alcohol stove in action, cooking your breakfast right in front of your eyes. The hike and tasting are FREE, but you need to sign up to reserve a spot for the hike. We will follow the yellow trail off of the trail head at 9688 Eby Road, Germantown Ohio. Please dress for the weather. You may want to bring water and an extra pair of shoes to change into after the hike. Some trails may be wet or muddy. The camp site is right in our own "backyard," so for those who have never experienced a winter night in the outdoors, this is the best way to break it in! This trip is by reservation only. 35 Day Alaskan Brooks Range Expedition
Joe Denniston spent 35 days with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) hiking and canoeing through the rugged tundra of the Brooks Range and the Gates of the Arctic National Park. The first ten days, about 70 miles, were spent hiking across the Brooks Range, via the continental divide. After a resupply of collapsible canoes and dry bags by float plane, he and his group paddled over 400 miles from the headwaters of Noatak River to the Chukchi Sea at Kotzebue Sound. During this time he learned how to live and travel above the Artic Circle and he encountered everything from grizzly bears to the world's smallest carnivore, the least weasel. He also learned how to paddle an open canoe in whitewater conditions, bake a pizza over a backpacking stove and how to travel safely in grizzly country. For 35 days, Joe and his group learned more about themselves and how to work together to achieve a common goal and the culmination of the trip was paddling across a five mile stretch of the of the Artic Ocean to reach Kotzebue, a small town of about 3,000 native Inupiat Indians, where Joe and his group showered for the first time in over a month and a half, and had a real breakfast of eggs and bacon.

Lessons Learned From An Appalachian Trail Long Distance Hiker.
Andy has vast long-distance hiking experience. Join us as he tells his stories and learn from his experience. Since 1994 Andy "Captain Blue" Niekamp has hiked 6,500+ miles on the Appalachian Trail (AT), a continuous footpath that runs through fourteen states from Spring Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. He has been awarded two "2,000 miler" certificates by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy which is conferred on hikers who have completed the entire AT and he is a Life Member of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Andy first became interested in backpacking in Boy Scouts, took his first solo hike on the AT in 1989, and since then has hiked the trail in sections end-to-end over two and a half times.

New Waterway Conservation Fee will support canoe and kayak access, programs.

An updated registration fee schedule is in effect for non-motorized watercraft with registrations set to expire March 1, 2010. It will provide additional funding for the maintenance and upgrade of non-motorized boat access and enhance recreational opportunities for paddlesports enthusiasts.

The registration for non-motorized watercraft will be $17. Alternative registration decals will be $22. The new fees do not include the standard writing fee of $3 received by watercraft registration agents. Ohio watercraft registrations are valid for a 3-year period and are collected by the ODNR Division of Watercraft. The revenue generated by the registration of canoes, kayaks, non-motorized sail boats, rowboats and inflatable boats will be deposited in the Waterways Safety Fund and used to maintain and upgrade existing non-motorized boat access sites such as canoe and kayak launch sites.

Ohio's largest remaining undeveloped forest to be preserved.

The State of Ohio plans to purchase the 15,849-acre Vinton Furnace Experimental Forest, representing Ohio's largest, last contiguous forested block still available for permanent protection. Located 75 miles southeast of Columbus, the forest is home to the state's largest known population of bobcats, and is also home to black bears, timber rattlesnakes, cerulean warblers and several rare plant species. Since 1952, land at the Vinton Furnace has been dedicated towards forest use and sustainability research. It sounds almost too simple, but don't forget that you can save a lot of energy, and therefore money, by making sure to turn off the lights when you leave a room.

Lighting is responsible for about 11 percent of a home's energy bills, and those continue to march up across most of the country, at a time when home prices are falling and job growth is soft. It's true that a compact fluorescent bulb uses about 75 percent less electricity than an incandescent, but the most energy-saving bulb of all is one that's turned off.

So get in the habit of flipping those switches when you leave a room. Kids can easily get in on the action, and it's an environmental value that will last a lifetime, and carry over into other areas

All of the canoes and kayaks have been moved to the new space located right off the parking lot. This new location is more convenient as there is no need to cross Main Street where the boats were previously located.

"We simply needed more space," states store manager Andrew Schlegel. "This new location makes it easier for our customers. We can load their new boat on their vehicle right in the parking lot."

When you think about it, kayak fishing makes a lot of sense. You can reach areas not accessible by other boats, it's quiet so you can sneak up on your quarry and it definitely saves gas! Kayaks can be retrofitted with rod holders, anchors, fish finders, paddle leashes and more! You can search the Internet for "kayak fishing" and you'll find all kinds of resources, tips and ideas.

Great Miami Outfitters carry a variety of kayaks made especially for angling - for example the Heritage Redfish and Heritage Featherlite models as well as the Native Ultimate, a kayak/canoe hybrid.

We carry two roasts - a Dark Italian and a Medium Vienna - both roasted in small batches by Kinetic Koffee in Arcata, California and shipped fresh (usually the same day) directly to our store in historic downtown Miamsburg, Ohio.

The USDA organic whole beans are packaged in attractive re-sealable foil bags. We love coffee so much, that we thought we'd share our passion for a great tasting cup o' joe with you too.

Disc Golf available at Great Miami Outfitters

We carry discs from Innova and Discraft. Sycamore Trails Disc Golf Course is located only a mile from the store and is considered to be one of the most challenging courses in the Miami Valley area.

What is Disc Golf?

Disc Golf is a sport in which individual players throw a flying disc into a basket or sometimes at a target. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, "The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc."

Disc golf is similar to traditional golf and uses much of the same rules and terminology. Unlike ball golf, most courses are located in public parks and are usually free to play. The modern disc golf target consists of a metal basket with chains hanging over it and was invented in 1976.

The flying discs used in play are very similar to the frisbee. However, a golf disc is much smaller than the traditional frisbee. Also, a frisbee has a rounded, flatter edge whereas a disc golf disc typically has a beveled edge. A golf disc has the potential to be thrown much farther than a typical, rounded frisbee and is not designed to be catchable.

Five Rivers MetroParks, Dayton Canoe Club, Five Rivers Outdoors, Miami Conservancy District, and Whitewater Warehouse will host the 8th annual Paddle in the Park. This free event offers instructional clinics, boat demos and other opportunities for canoe and kayak enthusiasts.

Clinics are aimed at the novice paddler and promote safety, skill development and enjoyment. These clinics are taught by American Canoe Association (ACA) certified instructors and are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Dress to get wet.

The event also offers the ability to try out the newest kayaks on the market. Most kayak manufacturers will be represented. No paddling experience is needed.

Participants must be 14 years of age.

We're Open!

After months of renovation work on our store space, we've finally opened. Yesterday, May 23rd we had the official ribbon-cutting ceremony with the City of Miamisburg officials. We're still putting a few finishing touches around the store and unpacking and displaying more merchandise, dusting shelves, cleaning windows, etc., so if you stop by, please keep in mind that we'll have more displays soon. We were so excited that we couldn't wait any longer to open.

For now, our hours are 10 - 8 Monday through Saturday, and Noon - 5 on Sundays. We will be open this Monday, Memorial Day, from Noon to 5. Please introduce yourselves when you stop in.

Backpacking Basics

We are pleased to partner with Five Rivers Metroparks to present an evening of backpacking basics. Details are below.

Backpacking Basics (ages 12 & older)

Get an introduction to backpacking and find your comfort zone in terms of trips and gear selection. The class will cover trip planning, trail techniques and nutrition, physical fitness, and "Leave No Trace" concepts. Don't miss this opportunity to check out the Miami Valley's newest outdoor specialty shop, Great Miami Outfitters. Backpacking Basics or other demonstrable experience is a prerequisite for local Five Rivers Outdoors overnight backpacking trips including Introduction to Backpacking.

New Storefront Look

Great Miami Outfitters update

We have not updated our blog in some time... so sorry! It's a very busy time for us as we wrap up all of the loose ends, but we plan to start adding new updates often. And we're working on our online store so for those of you out of the area you can still order from us. And soon, we'll have our e-mail newsletter ready for signing up. Look for some new photos to be posted soon. For anyone who has driven past our new location you've noticed a flurry of activity and construction crews. Our target date to open is May 14 if all goes right... just a little over a month away!

Adventure Summit

The 2nd Annual Miami Valley Adventure Summit is taking place at Wright State University this weekend, January 27th and 28th. The event is sponsored by Five Rivers MetroParks and Wright State University's Outdoor Resource Center to celebrate "the spirit of outdoor adventure by immersing the region into the vibrant lifestyle and culture of human powered endeavors through inspiration, education, and experience".

As part of the exposition, we have a display set up where you can enter for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate towards purchases at our store. No purchase necessary, of course. Unfortunately we can not be at the summit, since we are out in Salt Lake City, Utah attending the Outdoor Retailer Show.

Great Miami Outfitters on target to open Spring 2007

The renovation on the building is progressing nicely. The warmer weather has enabled exterior work to continue through December. Concrete and brick work on the rear patio, as well as sidewalks, curbs and landscaping are nearly completed. The photo shows some of the progress. Though the gravel is down for the parking area, it may be Spring before the asphalt is laid. The interior is progressing nicely also.

Outdoor Gear Brands

All outdoor enthusiasts have their favorite brands of gear, equipment, apparel and footwear. Most of those choices are based on what works, not what looks pretty or is fashionable. And of course, cost is a factor. But as we all know with technical products, you really get what you pay for. And you probably don't mind spending the money for quality products.

The goal of Great Miami Outfitters is to be a source of products that you want and will use. We plan to carry products that you may not be able to find locally, but have traveled great distances to purchase or bought over the Internet. And that's okay. We like to touch, feel and smell the products before purchasing too. Though you'll be happy to know that we'll also offer a great online store.

Like all products, outdoor gear is constantly changing and improving - getting lighter, stronger, easier to use, etc. We'll be making our choices as to what we carry very carefully, yet we'll constantly be evaluating the next best thing. For now, here is a list of brands we are looking at: (in no special order) Patagonia, Marmot, Mountain Hardwear, Cloudveil, Smartwool, Icebreaker, MSR, Thermarest, Sealine, Yakima, Bridgedale, Kelty, Camelbak, Asolo, Vasque, Keen, Montrail, Chaco, Teva, Big Agnes, Superfeet, Deuter, Osprey, Gregory, Nalgene, Black Diamond and Petzl.

We've received several responses from folks telling us what they like or don't like and why. We REALLY appreciate those messages of experience... so please keep those letters coming.

Store Interior Renovation

Earlier this week I posted a photo of the exterior back of the store. Today, I've included two photos of the front half interior of the store - one taken in September when the plaster still covered the bricks. The other photo was taken earlier this morning. It shows the progress. Plaster has been removed and openings have been created to the back half of the store. You'll notice that we're trying to salvage as much original material as possible including the pile of bricks and wooden beams on the floor.

The cast iron bathtub came from an upper floor and was in one of the guests rooms when the building served as a hotel and later as apartments. We're not sure if we'll have a use for it. Unless someone wants to wash up after coming off the river, though privacy may be an issue. Who knows!

Building Renovation

We plan to take photos at least weekly of the building renovation project. This photo was taken on Sunday, December 3rd and shows a view of the rear of the building (photo taken from Linden Avenue by TJ Chumps restaurant). Previously the building had an addition on the back with another building ajoining it. Those structures have been removed to make room for an outdoor patio area and additional parking spaces. The portion of the building on the left will be occupied by a wine store - A Taste of Wine - and we're really excited about that!

Great Miami Outfitters will occupy the space to the right, with our main entrance on the opposite side of the building (Main Street), though we'll have an entrance access from the patio area. If you'd like, please drop us a line and let us know of any gear you want us to carry.

Start of an adventure

My son and I had this crazy idea - Why not start an outdoor gear company to serve the outdoor enthusiasts in the Greater Miami Valley area of Ohio? (I always have these crazy ideas at the strangest times - luckily my family expects it from me).

Many people in the Dayton area are driving to Cincinnati to get their gear. The more we talked about it, the more excited we got. So over the next few months I did some research. The more people I spoke with, the more I thought that this just might work. Little did we know that our idea has blossomed into a reality so quickly. We researched possible locations, what we wanted to stock, size of store, etc.

We found a historic building located in downtown Miamisburg, Ohio. It met most of our criteria - close to the Great Miami River and the recreational trail, as well as a MetroPark with a 22-mile backpacking loop under construction.

The downside was that the building was in total disrepair. Fortunately a group of local investors had plans to renovate the building and bring it back to life. Little did we know that our timing was impeccable. The renovation of the building is progressing, and we've been able to give our input. The plaster is being removed from the interior walls, exposing the original 1860's brickwork. Really cool... the store space will have so much character. We can't wait until we open!
